Henchgirl by Rita Stradling is an original take on the dragon myth. Dakota is a henchgirl, a soldier for her grandfather who runs the island. She’s also a dracon, the descendant of a dragon. She’s a favorite soldier for her grandfather as she has the ability to see another’s soul, to pry into the layers that make up the essence of who they are. When one of her jobs leads to rich Braiden, a dracon with a powerful dragon father, she risks losing her place in the family. It doesn’t help that Braiden’s friend, Wyvern, doesn’t seem to like her. To make matters worse, he turns out to be a lot more important than she first suspected. When Dakota's friend from school goes missing, Dakota works with Wyvern to find her friend without getting in over her head.

Rita Stradling creates a fantasy world from our normal one. Dracons, vampires, werewolves, and witches are known (and often despised) by humans. The dracons are the most prominent in the government with Dakota’s grandfather running their island much like a mob boss runs things. Dakota is sympathetic and headstrong. Her mother would rather drink than parent, so she has to look out for her sisters. I can’t wait to see this world explored further in the second book! It has a rich history and customs dating back to when dragons came through to our world due to an industrial revolution which allowed them to survive longer. Rita Stradling takes an ordinary part of our history and enriches it with fantasy. Henchgirl has mystery, an exciting dragon ride, and a potential romance.
