Herakles by Simon Spence is the story of the Greek hero, Herakles, who is one of the strongest heroes of Greek mythology. The queen of the gods, Hera, sends two snakes to harm Herakles, the son of Zeus, while he is sleeping with his brother. Herakles grabbed the two snakes, lifted them into the air, and giggled in delight. Nothing scared Herakles and, as he grew up, his strength increased. His friend, the goddess Athena, sends him to see the wise Oracle so that the latter can guide Herakles. The Oracle tells Herakles to perform twelve tasks that he calls ‘Labours,’ which will test his strength and power. The queen of the gods hopes Herakles will not finish them so that he will never become a powerful hero. Will Herakles finish the ‘Labours’ using his power and strength?

The story is exciting and readers will be eager to know what the Labours are. The pictures are wonderful and they give clarity to the author’s expressions and breathe life into the characters and the scenes. It is a good bedtime storybook that will introduce children to some characters of Greek mythology. The story can also be used for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries and is a good book for reference. Stories like this are informative and educational and young readers get to learn a lot of new things through this story. For all those who are keen to learn more about the heroes of Greek mythology, this book will be an interesting read.
