Holly’s Hollyhocks by Marsha Jackson is a sweet story about a little girl named Holly. One day she and her mom are at a garden center when she discovers a packet of seeds with her name. She buys a couple of packets and is excited to plant them around her house. She soon finds out that she is going to need more seeds to finish the job. Using her problem-solving skills, she spies a lemon tree in her neighbor’s yard and negotiates a deal with him. Her lemonade stand is a success, and she can buy enough seeds to plant around her yard. Then comes the hard part – waiting for them to grow. Eventually, she has a beautiful yard full of tall colorful hollyhocks that attract admirers from miles around.

Holly’s Hollyhocks is an inspiring story for all kids who have an idea that they want to see come true. Holly imagines a yard full of beautiful flowers but doesn’t succeed right away. I loved seeing how she finds a solution herself that involves some hard work on her part. Even after she plants all her seeds, she still needs to care for them tenderly and patiently before she can enjoy the lovely results. The soft, muted illustrations by Sheena Whatcott fit the story perfectly. She has even included a final spread with some seek-and-find elements. Marsha Jackson has written a story that parents and grandparents will love reading with kids. Holly’s Hollyhocks is a flower lover’s delight.
