How To Be The Loving, Wise Parent You Want To Be. . . Even With Your Teenager! by Darryl Sollerh and Leslie King is a guide for parents to help them understand their teenagers. The book starts off by giving basic background information about teenagers and their need for independence. Each chapter of the guide is designated to various issues your teen may be going though i.e. privacy, bullying, punishment. The authors do a great job in providing examples and giving possible ways for parents to deal with each situation. I related most to the privacy chapter because it gave specific reasons why allowing your teenager privacy will help them to become a better young adult. The part about parents showing trust in teenagers is essential because teens do better when they feel like they are trusted and allowed to make mistakes, without being judged by their parents.

The quote that sticks in my head is: "Parenting is not about perfection." This is true in so many ways because parenting is about balance. Allowing yourself to step outside of the situation when a teenager lies is another great example that was given because it enables the parent to really look at what caused the lie, and also gives insight as to what needs to be worked on within the relationship with the teenager. This is an excellent guide for first time parents of teenagers because it is simple to read and understand, and the examples provided make sure you understand the authors' concepts.
