Born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, William Allan graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from McMaster University and a Bachelor of Journalism degree from Carleton University's School of Journalism.
He moved west and started a career with newspapers that lasted nearly 30 years. Most of that time was spent at The Leader-Post, the daily newspaper in Regina, Saskatchewan.
William was a reporter and copy editor from 1979 to 2008, reporting on crime and labour issues and later editing copy and doing page makeup.
He retired in 2008 and lives with his spouse Abby Ulmer and their cat Toby in Regina.
William wrote two books in 2016: Four Murders in a Small Town, a fictional crime story, and How to Self Publish Inexpensive Books and Ebook, which he wrote after learning about the publishing industry and marketing a book from his first book experience.
He also researched the many publishing options and publishers in order to expand his second book beyond just his own experience.
William has remained a newshound and avidly reads newspapers and collects books.
