So many of us are in a rat race, a rat race with an uncertain future and an undefined past. We barely stop to catch a breath as the world around us urges us on. Fast, distracted and exhausted are words that are familiar to many. Maya Thoresen, the author of Hygge: The Danish Secrets of Happiness, asks us to take a step back and assess life with an honest look. Using the Danish culture, she guides us on how to create happiness in our lives and live healthy lives. The Danish people have been said to be the happiest in the world and Maya Thoresen explores why this is so. Thoresen writes about the Danish way of life, covering their work approach, cuisine, and way of relating.

Though brief, Hygge: The Danish Secrets of Happiness by Maya Thoresen sheds light on how to live simply, taking in every moment and enjoying the journey of life. The book is timely considering the world’s culture now where capitalism rules most of the economies of the world. Thoresen's lessons are simple and easy to follow, which makes the book even more useful. I liked that Maya Thoresen picked a particular culture to drive home her message and an appropriate one at that. The Danish people have been labeled as being the happiest and it was great to learn what makes them so. Additionally, the book’s length is a plus for readers who shy away from lengthy books. The lessons contained in Hygge by Maya Thoresen are both practical and essential, making the book an interesting, helpful read.
