I Want to Be a Singer and a Lawyer: Lainey's Singer and Career Series, Book 1, is a children's book written by Garrett Carter and illustrated by Anahit Aleksanyan. Carter is concerned that there aren't enough books featuring children of color, and his Lainey and Coby Series is designed to address that deficiency. Lainey loves to sing, and she thinks she'd like to be a singer when she grows up. Her father thinks that being a singer is a great goal, but he thinks Lainey can do many things when she grows up and shouldn't just pick one dream. He reminds her how well she made the case for her and Coby to get a dog. Their parents weren't really that convinced until Lainey did the research and presented her arguments. Lainey realizes that she'd make a pretty good lawyer as well as a singer and now has two careers to dream about.
Garrett Carter's children's book, I Want to Be a Singer and a Lawyer: Lainey's Singer and Career Series, Book 1, is inspiring and entertaining all at once. Lainey's dad is supportive of her dream while, at the same time, he helps her focus on some other things she enjoys. I love the preparation work Lainey does for getting a dog and wish I had thought of that when I was a kid! I also was so impressed with Carter's clear and perceptive presentation of what a lawyer does. This book combines career choices with pet ownership and responsibility, and it does so brilliantly with Aleksanyan's marvelous illustrations. Each page has brightly colored images that work perfectly with the story. I Want to Be a Singer and a Lawyer: Lainey's Singer and Career Series, Book 1 is a first-rate children's book and is most highly recommended.
