In The Shadow Of A Valiant Moon by Stu Jones and Gareth Worthington is the second book in It Takes Death to Reach a Star series. The story starts in the ruins of the post-apocalyptic city of Etyom in the year 2255. The Kahangan fight to protect the people who live in the ruins. Mila knows she has to destroy Vedmak but the fact that he possesses her friend Demitri makes the mission so much harder. Vedmak has had a plan to avenge himself on the world since his execution in 1938 and he's finally found a way to see it done. Can Mila and the Kahangan stop him in time to save humanity?

I really enjoy dystopia and this novel is no exception. In The Shadow Of A Valiant Moon is jam-packed with action, science fiction, and a dash of fantasy to satisfy any sci-fi reader's palate. I didn't read the first book but it didn't stop me from enjoying this story. I feel that in order to get the full context of Mila and Demitri's friendship you need to start from the beginning. And what a friendship! I just loved the authors' handling of this theme and feel sad but happy with the outcome. I didn't study Russian history and found the backstory to be really informative on the Bolshevik era. There are interesting subplots that made the story really interesting. I recommend this series to anyone who likes realistic war/battle set-ups. All in all, I loved the characters who worked hard to make things better, no matter how difficult their circumstances.
