Insurgents is a work of fiction in the political and thriller subgenres and will serve as the first installment of a planned series. It is suitable for the general adult reading audience and was penned by author Stephen Payseur. The book follows lovers Cameron and Sterling as their fledgling relationship gets put to the test after a strange online presence starts a movement across the country. Soon they are caught in a deep and spiraling web of soldiers, hackers, and criminals as they run for their lives with the help of a mysterious online group that seems to have a vested interest in their survival.

Political thrillers such as this book live and die on their pacing and depth, something that Stephen Payseur is able to deliver in spades page after page. An exciting and constantly evolving story populated by dynamic and fully fleshed out characters, each of whom leaped from the page as a unique individual thanks to the prose which paints such vivid pictures of these people and the world they live in so that the whole adventure feels unnervingly close to reality. In addition to the challenge of spinning a complex yet engaging political intrigue, Insurgents sets itself the ambitious goal of laying the groundwork for future installments whilst feeling like a complete and whole story in and of itself. This is again something that the author accomplishes well, with an ending that left me excited for future installments but satisfied that the first story in the series also stood well on its own.

Insurgents by Stephen Payseur is set in Charlotte, North Carolina in the year 2028. Violence erupted throughout the U.S. resulting in over 200 people being killed or injured. Kyler Ringer, Commander of the Capitol Security Force, enlists Dr. Kristina Yarbro to help with finding Sam Kavanaugh and his militia group, New Millennium. The group claims that they wish to stop the liberal elites from taking control of their lives. Kyle is ordered to cease his investigation and receives unsolicited information from “Just a Guy, American Resistance” indicating that Kyle may have a mole in his organization. Cameron Allran (Plato) and Sterling Silver plot against New Millennium and Freedom Covenant, aided by informants who move between the dark web and secret government agencies. The duo finds themselves in a tangled web of militias and cyber-attacks, putting both their lives in danger.

Insurgents is a suspenseful novel filled with thrills and surprises. Author Stephen Payseur has an appealing writing style, fast-paced and succinct. The interesting array of characters is well-defined and easy to relate to even if their principles are disagreeable. The scenes and locations are described in detail and easy to visualize, from towns and cities to a cabin in the forest. I enjoyed the smooth flow of the story, comfortable and easy to follow with a few twists and turns. All-round, an exceptional story highly recommended to readers of all ages who enjoy conspiracies and action. I look forward to the sequel, Resistance, which will hopefully be available soon.
