It All Started in Africa by Suzanne Bowman Williams is an educational picture book for young children. A group of schoolchildren gathers around their teacher to listen to a story. The teacher begins her story to educate the children about African history. From slavery to extraordinary treasures, the author takes the reader on a journey of appreciating black history and what they had to endure to get to where they are today. So if your child is learning about black history at school, or if you simply want to educate them anyway, then this book will be perfect in explaining the events simply and effectively.

It All Started in Africa was a pleasure to read. The author has put a personal spin on her story as she tells the reader about her ancestry. Children will learn what the author teaches in a fun way with the use of repetition and rhyming. This is always a good technique to use when aiming to educate children, as they will pick up the information quicker and more easily. I thought I knew a lot about black history, but this book taught me more than I thought possible. Suzanne Bowman Williams is a great author and teacher and it shows in her work. The illustrations by Evelynn Jeanette are a perfect fit for the book; children will love them. And not only will children learn about important events by reading this book, but they will be entertained also. I love any book that educates and this is now on my favorites list. Keep writing, Suzanne, I hope to read more of your beautifully-written stories soon.
