Author Biography

Lora Cipriano is the mother of two children, one of which has severe food allergies. She also runs an online allergy free cookie and baked goods business called, Twin Treats, with her twin sister, Leanne. A portion of their sales from book sales and Twin Treats is donated to aid in food allergy research. After modifying and recreating recipes so that her son could enjoy dessert treats and family dinners that are allergy friendly, she decided to publish her first cookbook in hopes that it would help give meal ideas to other families facing the same food challenges. She earned her Masters of Business Administration from the University of Maryland, University College and her Bachelors of Science in Marketing from Pennsylvania State University. She lives in Northeastern Pennsylvania with her husband and two children. Leanne Sebastian lives in Northeastern Pennsylvania with her husband and daughter. She enjoys creating different foods and making crafts. Besides baking allergy friendly treats, Leanne has a soap and candle business. After buying products in the store that contained unnecessary ingredients, she decided to make her own and has been doing so ever since. Leanne earned her Masters of Education in Elementary Education and Middle School English from Holy Family University, and her Bachelors of Humanities in English from Pennsylvania State University. She has also earned a Reading Specialist Certification from La Salle University. Lora and Leanne continue to write enjoyable children's food allergy books. A children’s book that educates, entertains, and offers real tools for coping with a life-threatening health issue is a rare find. It’s Cool to Bring Your Own Cupcake: A Children’s Food Allergy Awareness Book by Leanne Sebastian and Lora Cipriano is just such a book. In 24 charmingly illustrated, brightly colored and easy-to-understand pages, Sebastian and Cipriano cover the 8 most common food allergies, what the effects of those allergies can be, what to do if a reaction occurs, strategies for coping with allergies and avoiding cross-contamination, models for navigating social situations and occasions pleasantly and proactively, a plethora of positive messages that being different does not mean one can’t fit in (as the title implies), and even a quartet of delicious-sounding recipes free of peanuts, tree nuts or eggs. This slender volume is a treasure trove of useful information in a family-friendly format, tailor-made for helping children learn about very real dangers.

It’s Cool to Bring Your Own Cupcake: A Children’s Food Allergy Awareness Book by Leanne Sebastian and Lora Cipriano would be an excellent catalyst for conversations about food allergies, both for children who are allergic and for children who are not allergic but who need to be sensitive to the needs of others around them. Adults can safely and easily share this book with children, who can then share it with other children and adults themselves. Along the way, a good time will be had by all!
