Once again I’ve had the absolute pleasure of reading one of Viki de Lieme’s books for children – delightfully illustrated once more by Maria Burobkina - following the characters of Jacky and Raff as they teach young readers important lessons about the language they use and the attitudes behind it in Jacky and Raff and the Truth about “Mine”. After Jacky has his toys stolen by his little brother yet again, he storms off into the wilds, upset with his mother’s suggestion that he simply shares his toys. There in the savannah, Jacky runs into Raff who helps him talk through his feelings and understand that sharing something of yours doesn’t mean you lose it; it just means it makes you and someone else even happier.

It is so fundamentally important that during a child’s development we should help them to understand how the way they talk about and think about the world influences every aspect of how they live in it. I’m grateful for authors like Viki De Lieme who has once again provided an important bridge between parent and child for beginning those conversations, and the lesson within this book about sharing is an important one that is excellently taught. Jacky is a particularly fun and accessible character for young readers, and the way Raff explains things to him makes even hard-to-grasp ideas feel grounded and easy to understand. All of this is enhanced enormously by the charming artwork of Maria Burobkina which brings the world of Jacky and Raff and the Truth about “Mine” to life.
