Rose Thorn opened an envelope addressed to her husband, Donovon. She was shocked to see it was a birthday card from a college student declaring her love for him. To say she is angry would be an understatement. Rose’s suspicions were confirmed; she had given up her dream of an education and career for the two time slug. Determined to keep her family together for the sake of their daughter, she decided to return the envelope to her husband’s lover. Rose confided to her hair dresser, Laverne Fine, her confidant. Laverne tried to talk reason into her best friend; it wasn’t a good idea to confront the young woman. This book is about three women whose lives are interwoven by friendship. The central character is Rose. However, the author developed the secondary characters as well as she did Rose. Laverne desires a visa so she can travel and know what her boyfriend Paul is hiding. Wendy is having a mid-life crisis. She has just turned 40 and wants a more permanent and closer relationship with her lover, Miles.

I love this book. Author Sandra Ottey has created a strong main character that will encourage women everywhere. I was quickly caught up by the story with a strong connection to Rose. Ottey’s tale is one of heart break, triumph, and inspiration. She managed to include a bit of romance and humor. When Rose returned the birthday card, I was cheering for her. I would have had the same reaction. I find it hard to believe "Jamerican Connection" is Sandra Ottey’s debut novel. She writes like a seasoned author. Ottey’s talent is obvious and I can hardly wait for her next book.
