Jenny and the Hummingbird Faeries is a middle grade adventure to remember. Jenny is a tomboy, and is always trying to compete with - and beat - her older brothers at sports, games and competitions of all sorts. After a terrible accident, which may not have been an accident at all, Jenny is chosen by the Hummingbird Faeries who live in their sacred hills of Catalina Island. Dark forces are targeting the faeries and Blood Blossom Trees are taking over and ruining the environment on their small island home. It's up to Jenny to stop the bad guys and to save the fairies and her family from the danger surrounding them. S.R. Zales has a very unusual sense of adventure that permeates his stories so that you feel a thread of unease the entire time you're reading until the very end.

Some of the writing was a bit more cynical for a middle grade fiction piece than I'm used to, but different strokes for different folks I suppose. S.R. Zales blends fantasy and spunk in a way that makes you wish you could find your very own Hummingbird Faeries in your back yard. Jenny was a bit of a brat, but she grew on me as the story went along. I believe that the target audience of middle schoolers will really love this story, though it may be somewhat lost on an audience of a higher grade. I enjoyed the fantasy aspects the most and liked the Blood Blossom Trees as a kind of eco-villain.
