John Ford: Poet in the Desert, a poetic biography of John Ford, is written by Joseph Malham. John Ford was a famous director of many Westerns such as The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and She Wears Yellow. He also explored the different aspects of general life when directing films such as How Green Was My Valley. He is most likely known to readers and movie-goers as the director and creator of the famous character, John Wayne. The film director explored the historical, mythical, religious and political aspects of human life to complete the characters' lives within his films. This book offers readers a personable look into the troubled life of a cinematic mastermind.

Readers and movie-goers often wonder where the ideas for the characters come from, or are there similar traits portrayed within the characters that match the author or director? Author Joseph Malham has created a wonderful, skillfully written biography of John Ford, director. Joseph allows readers to gain insight on where ideas for characters' personalities have come from in John Ford's films. John Ford was a troubled man who often showed it by being ill-mannered toward actors and portraying that characteristic within the actors' roles. His Irish Catholic heritage is also shown within many films and characters.
