Kalvarianhof: The Perilous Journey by Walter Soellner is a historical fiction saga that covers the lives of life long friends Markus and Levi building up to World War I. Markus Mathias is a young Catholic while Solomon Levi is a young Jew. The two characters are Lancers in the Imperial German East Asian Expeditionary Force and share the strength they derive from their faith. The story is a sprawling epic that takes the two characters through many trying obstacles, including escaping with the historical character Sun Yat Sen on a pirated Chinese mail boat, a shark attack near the island of New Guinea, and icebergs near the south Atlantic. Sometimes the two characters are together and their tales coincide. Other times the friends lead separate adventures, like when Markus takes on the dangerous task to find Li Ling, his beautiful love. The story crosses many continents and many different countries and is a wonderful historical piece that readers will thoroughly enjoy.

This is such a gorgeously written novel. The settings are so beautiful. A reader can pick up this book and travel to exotic places like Uruguay, New Guinea, China, Africa, Europe, and many more. The detail with which these places and cultures are described is as fascinating as it is beautiful. The story is full of adventure, love, romance, and friendship that will appeal to a wide range of readers, all of whom will appreciate the skilful story telling and the historical content of this book.
