Lacey Leighton by Ruth Jones is a historical literary fiction novel that would appeal most to a mixed audience of young adult women and adult females who enjoy female protagonists who are willing to go against the flow of society. The year is 1877 and thirteen-year-old Lacey Leighton has been invited to attend the prestigious Philadelphia school known as The Harlan School for Young Ladies. The invitation, if accepted, will take Lacey Leighton away from her current wretched life and provide her with instruction in the finer aspects of female life. Will Lacey Leighton seize the opportunity no matter the costs, or will she use her wits to uncover the true intentions of the school and how they relate to her family.

Lacey Leighton by Ruth Jones has a cover that hinted at the mysteries hidden between the pages of this book without giving away any of the true plot. Lacey Leighton was an interesting character with how she started out as a young thirteen-year-old and yet, throughout the book, developed into a young woman with an imagination that can only help her outwit those who would do her harm. I loved how Lacey grew as a character throughout the plot; the way she managed to handle the school’s intentions towards her, and those that saw her as a threat, truly highlighted the strength of her character. Overall, I really enjoyed the unpredictable nature of the characters and I found that the author ended the book in a way that fits perfectly with the overall feel of the plot line.
