Lake of Flowers is another sensational work of fiction in the ancient historical subgenre which was penned by author N.L. Holmes. Written as the fifth installment of the exciting and intriguing Lord Hani Mysteries, we once again find ourselves in ancient Egypt with two major plot threads unfurling to give us our first mysteries to uncover. For one, Hani must investigate thefts from the royal household and see if there are any deadly motives behind them, and for the other, anyone who was a witness to the questionable birth of the crown prince seems to be meeting a dangerous end. With members of his own inner circle included in the latter group, Hani must weigh up his allegiance to the crown against his inner sense of peace and justice.

I always relish the chance to return to the excellent works of N.L. Holmes and the Lord Hani series because I know I’m going to get high-quality storytelling and emotive, realistic characters to follow. This installment was no exception, and once again, Holmes raises the bar with the level of depth, intrigue, and conspiracy that Hani must face. I really enjoyed Neferet, especially in this installment, and am always excited to see the female roles of power and prominence being highlighted and expanded against this historical backdrop. I was also very impressed with the suspense build-up in this particular volume, which made for some genuine heart-in-mouth moments later down the line. Overall, I would highly recommend Lake of Flowers and the series in general to readers seeking high-quality mystery fiction interlaced with historical accuracy, atmosphere, and emotionally resonant characters.
