The American 'baby boom' era was an incredible phenomenon, as the nation witnessed an incredulous amount of births from the years of 1946 and 1964. Today, many of the 'baby boom' generation are grown up, and are raising their own children. In Last of the Baby Boomers: One Man's Journey, author Scott Barta provides his unique perspective on this historical occurrence, giving insight on the effects of the Baby Boom generation through his personal experiences. Born in 1962, Barta is an interesting subgroup of people known as the "last of the baby boomers." He continues to explore this idea through his experiences during college, his fiftieth birthday, and raising his own children. Written with a clear, lighthearted tone, this is a book young and old will want to pick up and read.
As a budding historian, I am naturally drawn to personal accounts about major events in American history. In my Advanced Placement United States history course, we are currently studying the baby boom era and its effects, so when I saw Last of the Baby Boomers: One Man's Journey, I knew I had to read it! I'm glad I did, because within this book is an eyewitness account of the social and cultural effects of the 'last of the baby boomers' era. I loved the twist that author Scott Barta took by taking into account the unique social gap that the last baby boomers of the early 1960s had in comparison to the early baby boomers of the 1940s. Truly a great read!
