But give him a chance because his revelations about witnessing real events in distant lands and foreign worlds that are far different from ours have a huge bearing on this novel’s plot. After hearing him out on his belief systems, the author proceeds to the narrative of his novel taking place in the year 2058. It centers on a military geologist called Sarge working on Mars. The political climate on Earth continues to spawn civil unrest as everyone is preoccupied with the neurotic notion of a Martian apocalypse. Sarge stumbles upon a Martian civilization where he meets a female Martian who is fated to become his love. His friendship with the Martians behooves a change in him that will make him trace his deeds in the past.

Robert Maxxim’s training in music reflects in the lyrical quality of his prose. Its good sense of composition makes it an astonishing novel that crosses science, philosophy, and spirituality. He manages to subtly inject his core beliefs within the appropriate time and situations in the storyline, thus making it flow with the narrative and it doesn’t feel forced. Graphic illustrations and diagrams add credibility to Maxxim’s visions so you are convinced that he is committed to the idea of the true science of life infused with mystical strains. The only caveat I will give is that you need to give yourself time to process these complex ideas because they can prove to be overwhelming. Legacy is written by a storyteller with the mash-up sensibility of a dreamer, scientist, philosopher, and romantic. This story makes for great reading. But be sure you have enough of a grasp on the concepts presented here or you might decide to discontinue reading.

However, when it comes to the narrator's identity, he changes names and forms throughout the entire story from reincarnation. Having no faith in God, his story unfolds on the planets of Mars and Earth. The narrator valiantly fights, and in several instances perishes. Then he is reincarnated as another person while retaining some memories in his subconscious. As he changes identity throughout the story, he begins to become aware of someone watching him. He begins his quest in self-discovery.

I found this particular science fiction story to resemble the Book of Revelation in the Bible. Robert Maxxim eloquently described the emotion of love's purity in Legacy Episode 1: The Search For Love. As the depth of the book is explored, I watched the full evolution of mankind from selfish conquerors to accepting beings embracing one another as equals, despite race/species. This is not a story to take at face value; every chapter exposes people's fears and sins without God. I liked watching the narrator's personal growth as he drew closer to God. The pace of the story is slow, but this is effective in portraying the development of each character. Interestingly, the viewpoint of the narrator and his adversaries shift from male to female, warrior to scientist, peasant to leader of nations. There is a major lesson to learn from this book and the journey to understanding the full weight of it is imperative. I recommend this book to anyone that likes science fiction. There is some mild violence but nothing overly graphic, and the description of love is never explicit. This beautiful story isn't a quick read, but I did find myself looking at the world we are in today and seeing the social issues we need to overcome.
