Legions of Lilith: Ghosts of the Past is a work of new adult fantasy fiction penned by Deanna R Sweeney, and follows on from book one: The Awakening. We return to Veronica’s story after the first adventure at her workplace saw her coming to terms with her gift of visions and the past lives which have led her into an epic centuries-old battle with the powerful Lilith. In this new adventure, we see Veronica considering the events which have shaped her past as she looks towards the battle of the future that is yet to come. We see her hone all her remembered powers and skills, ready to protect herself and her loved ones from the demons coming their way.

Veronica takes help from her supernatural friends and her newfound human allies in this next battle of the Legions of Lilith series, which continues some very enjoyable storylines and character arcs from the first book. After the chaos and devastation of book one, we see Veronica undergo some powerful personality shifts. I enjoyed the emotional intensity of her dealing with the murders before she finds new strength to try to defeat Lilith once and for all. Author Deanna R Sweeney does a good job reminding readers of the previous lore and history between the two women, and the loose threads from The Awakening return and become important plot points of their own as the twists and turns continue. Overall, Legions of Lilith: Ghosts of the Past is an excellent continuation of an enjoyable fantasy series.

Legions of Lilith: Ghosts of the Past by Deanna R Sweeney is a continuation of the first story in the series, The Awakening. Veronica has special gifts. She has visions and she has lived many lives in the past and all of this has left her isolated and living a very lonely life. She has spent centuries watching the people she loves being killed and she has made the decision that this age-old battle with Lilith must stop. Veronica’s next journey will take her back through her past, a past where she faces loss, lies and truth, a past where she and her friends must hone their skills as they confront demons and death. Can Veronica defeat the evil or is she doomed to failure?

Legions of Lilith: Ghosts of the Past by Deanna R Sweeney was an excellent story. I didn’t read book one but that didn’t stop me from falling headfirst into this story as I followed Veronica on her new journey. I found the characters very easy to relate to and I found that there were enough back-references to the previous book, in terms of characters and history, to make it easy to follow this one. In terms of plot, I couldn’t fault it; the book started on a high point with a great prologue and then slipped easily into a first-person narrative, with plenty of action and suspense. The heart-stopping ending is a definite lead-in to a third story and the way this is written, you will forget that you are reading a fantasy novel; you will be so invested in the story that you won't put this down until you reach the last page.
