Lensfogger's BEST: A Super-Hero's Collection of Humor, Satire & Short Stories takes a look at the quirks and tropes that compose contemporary America and skillfully subverts, lampoons, and examines them. A good short story lingers. It dwells in your head hours after reading the piece. Great short stories, however, become an integral part of your psyche, so much so that you eventually use them as examples to prove a point in drunken yet serious bar discussions. Lensfogger's BEST: A Super-Hero's Collection of Humor, Satire & Short Stories has given me enough material to enliven my night time jaunts all the way to the first sign of liver failure.

Dissecting prose, immaculate set up and construction, and barbed wit that draws just enough blood to be felt but not enough to utterly ruin the subject, Roger Blake has crafted a compilation that never fails to elicit a muffled snort of intellectual amusement. Yes, intelligence is a trait that is a must for both satire and humor, but Blake stands out by having a heightened sensitivity regarding his chosen subjects, be it the foppery that is British royalty or the various societal clashes of race, gender, and status in America. This sensitivity pervades the entire collection, and sometimes gives way to pure empathy, as the case was in Rose, a surprisingly emotional read with a lesson all of us should take to heart. Roger Blake needs to write more of these wonderful stories, and readers need to recognize his penchant and skill in crafting tales that amuse and teach at the same time.
