“Whatever is in your back cast will be reflected in your fore cast,” Steve explained as he was teaching Josh how to fly fish, but within that simple statement there was a life lesson which Josh latched onto quickly. Lessons from the Creek by Stephen Payseur is a very gentle metaphorical account of how one man’s quest toward spiritual growth is affected by some of the simple lessons that can be learned while fly fishing. When Steve met Josh along the creek bank while he was enjoying a week-long getaway of fly fishing on his favorite stream in the mountains, he was hardly expecting to discover so many things about himself and most of all to uncover one of the deepest mysteries of life. As Josh shares Steve’s campfire, meals, and fishing, their discussions of life and more specifically spiritual life touch on some of the finer points of Christian living and spiritual growth in a way that makes a deep impression upon Steve. Where has his life been and where is it going? What spiritual lessons will he take home from his fishing retreat?

Lessons from the Creek is a gentle, metaphorical object lesson for spiritual living which is brilliantly laid forth by author Stephen Payseur. Through the subtle actions and conversations which take place between Steve and Josh, the reader is given not only words of growth and encouragement, but pictures as well. Gentle, inspiring and profound; Lessons from the Creek is an excellent book to give readers gentle encouragement toward Christian growth.
