Bartholomew Beck thought his new job on the Texas oil pipeline was part of his natural life progression after his writing career failed until a coworker turns up dead on the job site. The clincher: she was killed in exactly the same manner that his neighbor was nearly twenty years ago. Beck wrote his first novel based on the events of the neighbor’s murder to ensure that another man was framed for the murder, so clearly this was a copycat killing to bring attention back on him. To further complicate matters, the accused death row sentence is scheduled to be carried out soon, and an investigative journalist is sniffing around for one more exclusive article before the execution takes place. Beck uses all of his skills not only to protect his lies and the integrity of his first novel to turn the journalist to the new murder but, of course, things never go according to plan. Let the Guilty Pay by Rick Treon is an exciting ride that doesn’t let go until you turn the final page.

I enjoyed Let the Guilty Pay because it was different from many of the mystery novels I have read. I like the various points of view that let you see the story from a variety of perspectives, as well as the flashbacks that tie the past crime to the current one. It also ties the characters together well, and the glimpses of Beck’s job on the pipeline add a dimension of depth to the plot. Clearly, Beck (and really, all of his coworkers) are working hard to put the past behind them, despite its annoying tendency to keep coming back. Rick Treon does an excellent job of creating a compelling tale of intrigue, deception, and mystery that will keep you guessing right until the end. Definitely a fascinating tale!
