Max Logan McCoy is permanently back from the dead, but her contact with ‘the other side’ is not yet over. In Life After Death by Sharon Saracino, a rude awakening by Alicia, the Superintendent of Spiritual Impediment who has returned from her maternity leave, drags Max back to the spirit world. Max is placed in a new position as a Retriever of souls who are inadvertently stuck in limbo in the Between. Just like her temporary experience with taking Alicia’s place during her maternity leave as SSI, there are no instructions or training to help her carry out her assignment. Near death again, Max finds herself at the home of the Grim Reaper, who then advises her about how to get to the Between to rescue several people from a plane crash. Meeting the Timekeeper and a Hellhound puppy she calls Blondie, Max sets off to retrieve two souls before they are lost for good and she is taken by Cerberus, Hellhound of the Underworld. Does Max have what it takes to succeed and will she be happy with the outcome?

Life After Death by Sharon Saracino, the sequel to Death Benefits, is another great story told with humor and a lot of heart. While Max faces her personal issues and takes advantage of her second chance at life and love, she learns more about her past and ends up with plenty of questions about her future. The writing is conversational and fun, and Max’s emotions and interpersonal development are easy to empathize with. Life After Death is a coming of age tale for adults of any age.
