If you die, do you go to Heaven or Hell? What if you chose not to go to either? In Jenny Mercer's Little Death, she introduces Sam Sullivan, an incubus that was banned from his partner for seventy-five years. Sam died in a fire in 1852 and chose to stay on Earth. He met Tabitha Wood, a succubus, and the two were inseparable. Both incubus and succubus had to seek out dreamers and then enact their sexually explicit dreams. Tabitha was caught speaking to one of her dreamers while he was awake and so a ban was placed on her by the “Leaders.” She could not be with Sam for seventy-five years. Sam waited and pined for Tabitha but then took up a relationship with a human. Amy provided him with companionship, but he was walking a fine line. After six months of being in a relationship, Amy professes that she is pregnant. At the same time, he learns that Tabitha is no longer being held underwater, but is free to prowl at night. Meanwhile, Tabitha is on the hunt for a relic that will absolve the ban so she could be with Sam again. Will they stay apart? What is Sam going to do about the baby?

Jenny Mercer made a cast of very well-developed characters that fell into place with the main story while still having individual mini-stories. I disliked Amy from the start. She was very irritating and there was an underlying air of deception about her. Tabitha brought a balance to Sam as she was level-headed and calculating compared to his impulsive nature. I enjoyed the dialogue and the pace was well-balanced. There are erotic scenes, but they are shown more from an emotional standpoint instead of physical interaction. Little Death has an engaging plot, character personalities that I could connect with, and the possibility of a happily ever after being a chance instead of being definite. The ending was excellent and suggested at more books being written with Sam and Tabitha potentially being protagonists. I recommend adults who are interested in fantasy pick up this amazing magical book. Is it possible that when you have a sex dream that a succubus or incubus may be involved as well? We may never know.
