"Losses and Gains," book two in Karen Wiesner's 'Cowboy Fever Series,' is so much more than a romance novel; it is a story of love, resentment, sibling rivalry and second chances. Janaya decides to give up on pursuing her dream of making it big in Nashville as a country singer. It is not really her dream, but a dream that her older sister Colleen had but never pursued. Dropping it, she returns home to Texas. Janaya did not just leave years ago to follow her dream, but she ran away from living in the shadow of her older sister and also from the love of her life, whom her sister married. Lance lost his wife and son in a fire on the ranch and has been trying to move on; however, he is unprepared for his sister-in-law and the girl who broke his heart so many years ago to return and cause havoc on his heart.

I was immediately drawn into the story and into the characters' lives! Janaya is such a lovable main character and one that can be related to on so many levels. I found myself empathizing with her on so many different occasions and also cheering her on in the middle of making decisions. The relationships, interactions and conversations between the characters are well-written and credible. Janaya has always felt as if she were loved less and was less important than Colleen, but as her mother explains, Colleen was always the "squeaky wheel" and, therefore, received the attention that she demanded, while Janaya was not and did not receive the attention she should have. The scene where Janaya and her mother really talk was well-done and is a turning point for them both. This is a great, quick read that will keep you turning the pages and enjoying life on the ranch!
