In Louie the Labrador Retriever by A.J. Richards, Louie is a playful and intelligent Labrador retriever puppy, eager to show readers where he is from, what his daily life should be like and what humans should do to care for him. The information is presented at roughly the level of the second grade child and is educational in the general sense as well as specific to the care of a dog. There is a list of foods that are good and healthy as well as some that are unfit for canine consumption. A two-page set is devoted to the proper way for a strange human to approach a dog for the first time, no fast and unexpected movements. Many things need to be part of the routine care of a dog, including brushing their teeth, clipping their nails and cleaning their ears.

Nearly all children want the excitement of having a puppy, for they are playful, entertaining and provide a great deal of emotional satisfaction. However, as parents have been saying for a long time, having a pet is a responsibility that must be taken very seriously. In only a few pages, Richards provides an excellent introduction to owning a dog, what animals do, as well as a synopsis of what responsible humans need to do to take care of them. This is a quality children’s book that will help prepare children for when that new dog arrives.
