Low Reign by Mario D. King is a coming of age story of two boys as they try to find a way to chase their dreams while making sense of their reality. LJ and Bee are two friends on the brink of adulthood. The boys are barely sixteen and both are looking for an escape from their homes. Bee wants to get away from his alcoholic and abusive father to become a successful chess player. LJ, on the other hand, just wants to get out of the house and away from his police officer father, a mother who nags a bit too much and a little brother who is annoying. Both boys are looking for an escape as they try to figure out life one day at a time. However, special circumstances give them the shock of their lives and alter everything they know. On their journey, they discover romance, happiness, dreams and realities.

Low Reign by Mario D. King is a brilliant story of two boys who learn what it means to be a man. We see Bee living in a desperate situation and looking for any way to get out of it. On the flip side, we see LJ who has everything that a person needs yet he is not happy. However, the two boys find comfort in each other and that proves to be enough to give them a sense of belonging. The narrative is brilliantly handled to give perspective to the story. However, what makes me love this story more is how the author makes it a reflection of life. You can see little glimmers of your own life; you can also relate to LJ or Bee and feel the desperation they are feeling. Music plays such an important role in the story. You can tell the mind frame of the boys and other characters by the music they are listening to. How amazing is that! The author has brought something magical yet so normal to readers. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves reading Toni Morrison.
