Lyrical Voices is a collection of poetic works and lyrics. It is suitable for readers from young adults upward and was penned by Lakella L. Taylor and Frankie L. Fipps, and each piece is titled and attributed to whichever poet penned it. Speaking on important personal issues such as going through pain, family struggles, and the experience of being African American in today’s world, the authors express emotional truths which are deeply related to their experience, but also touch on much more widely relatable themes. As such, the work delivers the full spectrum of human emotion for poetry enthusiasts and those who seek comfort in the words of others.

Poetry books are often very good at speaking to the soul, but there’s something powerful and resonant in the words of Lakella L. Taylor and Frankie L. Fipps, who really have a knack for deeply touching the heartstrings. I really enjoyed the curation of these works as they flow from one concept to another, and there’s a lot of variance in style and subject matter to keep things fresh. The balance of the abstract and orderly in poems like “Apartment” really struck me and stayed in my memory, whilst more traditionally lyrical works like “Love Poem of the Day” capture the simplicity of a moment whilst also leaving room for emotions to breathe through the verses. Another absolute standout for me, emotionally speaking, was “Shame on You”, where I felt I really got to know Lakella L. Taylor’s personality and open heart well. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend Lyrical Voices to poetry fans everywhere for its honesty and accomplished wordplay.
