In Edinburgh in the mid-1990s, Rachel White, a young archaeologist, finds she has been left £8 million by an old lady she only met when she was a child. Why had she received this mysterious legacy? Determined to find the answer, she begins to uncover secrets, including secrets about her mother. She learns of her mother's experiences as a 5 year old in a concentration camp in WWII. But, what does that have to do with Ma Polinski, and what made Ma Polinski leave her everything? As she and her best friend, Nina, dig deeper, they began to find answers...shocking answers about betrayal and even death.

Ma Polinski’s Pockets is an interesting, easy to read, somewhat differently bizarre story. I’m not really sure how I feel about it or how to classify it. To me it isn’t a mystery, in the true sense, but has spots of mystery and suspense particularly toward the end. The story is very detailed. The first few chapters are all back fill, and perhaps, maybe a tad too much. As I continued to read, I found myself growing fond of the characters, particularly Rachel and her friend Nina, and pulled for them as they searched for clues. The secondary characters...her brother, his best friend and her parents... were not so well defined. In fact, I never fully understood why they were portrayed as such until, at least with her parents, the very end. The story was well plotted but, as before, very detailed as to the day to day occurrences of the protagonist’s life. After so much detail in the beginning and middle of the story, the ending was slightly abrupt. Overall, the things I have noted didn’t detract from the quality of the work. I would recommend it.
