Mama's Kitchen: An Inspirational Collection of Poems by Shirley Honeycutt is motivational and uplifting. It covers diverse topics like suicide, death, friendship, and other life-related emotions. The poet takes us on a personal journey of her emotions that cover mundane and serious things in life. Her tightness in writing style and spoken word sound is what makes the poems interesting to read. The poems are profound and poignant and will move readers with their simplicity. The theme is ordinary, but it captures the inner feelings of the poet beautifully and paints them well for readers.

The poet has captured varied emotions with her fine crafting of words. The depth and clarity of her words are of supreme quality. It is difficult to say which poem is best because they all deal with different themes. All the poems speak well to the audience with their humor and poignancy. The seasonal poems, Fall, Winter, Winter 2, Spring and Summer, are rich in imagery and they capture the mood of the changing seasons effectively. The skill, passion, and originality with which the seasons have been captured indicate the author's keen eye and writing skills.

The sketches in the collection give clarity to some of the words and poems and they also add some color to the book. The author has chosen her words carefully to give wonderful sound and meaning to the poems and the collection is a masterful rendering of human longing.
