Abuse. Betrayal. Escape. Freedom. Those are the themes at the start of Margel’s Madness, the newest book by author Darcy Scott. Margel Matthews, a thirty-year-old single mom of a precocious and delightful four-year-old daughter, is living in Mosquito Harbor, Maine. An outsider to the town, Margel has come there to escape. By escaping her past and her difficult family situation, Margel hopes to protect her young daughter from the poisons of her family, and for a fresh start where no one knows her. When Margel finds out that her mother is dying, she returns to her home. Once there, she discovers there’s more to her past than she ever knew, and all was not as it seemed. Protecting her daughter from her past becomes her primary objective as she has to choose between a chance at happiness and her obligation to those she loves.

Darcy Scott’s newest work is a true gift. Beautifully written, with complex characters that are simply drawn, I was fully engaged in this story from the get-go. I understand that this book is somewhat of a departure for Ms. Scott, and is a semi-autobiographical telling of events from her own life. This is evident in the way that the author truly understands the emotionalism of her characters, and is able to write the story in a realistic and beautiful way. Another bonus for those of us who love the coast, the settings of Margel’s Madness come across so genuinely that I could almost feel the sea breeze. I highly recommend this book to any lover of fiction, any person who is looking for a read with characters with complex and intriguing lives, and any person who simply loves a well-written novel. The only caution I would have for the reader is to be sure you have a blank calendar when you pick up this book because, once you start reading it, you won’t want to put it down!
