In 1897, Maris is a young woman who’s forced to follow in her late mother’s footsteps as a prostitute, in a famous brothel located in the Irish slums just outside of London. She promised herself that she would work until she saved up as much money as she could for a better life. She almost reaches her goal, but everything changes when she’s attacked by vampires. A woman named Anastasia not only saves her, but changes and sires her to become a Deamhan.

Maris (The Brotherhood Files #1) by Isaiyan Morrison puts a new spin and an original premise to the classic vampire theme which I find fascinating. I’m also impressed with the world building; the Deamhan are somewhat similar to the vampires, but they were created by humans and are much more guarded and secretive with their existence. Hunted down by both vampires and humans, Maris is the key to whether the Deamhan kind continues to exist or not.

It’s easy to root for Maris and it’s fascinating to follow her journey as the centuries go by. She turned from just another prostitute from the slums to an important individual for the Deamhan. She’s more mature than some older Deamhan; such as Finley, who becomes arrogant and careless with their life in Chicago. The story is highly engaging and has great depth as I couldn’t stop reading until the end. Morrison has the ability to get readers to care for her characters. This to me gives this series something extra that lifted it above typical vampire-themed novels, along with the well-written plot. I look forward to reading more of Morrison’s work.
