One day, a mouse named Mattison decides to venture out of his home for a walk. While on his way, Mattison begins hearing odd sounds, leading him to believe that someone is following him. Soon, he starts counting the animals he suspects are following him, making quite a long list as he tries to flee his pursuers. Feeling concerned about what's going to happen to him, Mattison is plagued by anxiety. He trips over and loses his favorite hat, only to find it as he comes across his friends and family who have thrown him a surprise birthday party. Now, Mattison only needs to count the gifts and different types of food available at his party. Mattison Mouse Counts is a humorous children's picture book by Raven Howell.

We always tend to fret about things that ultimately turn out to have no bearing on our lives. Mattison Mouse Counts is a short story that demonstrates this fact to perfection. Raven Howell's engaging rhyme is a joy to read and is bound to get a chuckle or two out of you. Children will find a lot to learn from Mattison's birthday adventures, not the least of which is counting numbers. Apart from the fun-filled narrative, Keeshan Defay's colorful illustrations are the icing on the cake and make the story all the more immersive. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and I recommend it to children and adults alike. You are in for an enjoyable read with this one.
