Do you play the kazoo? It’s a fun little instrument and one little boy is excited to be taking his kazoo on a family trip to the zoo (kind of rhymes, doesn’t it?). What do you think the animals at the zoo will do when a little boy visits and plays his kazoo? Do you think they’ll pick up their instruments and play along too? Like the hippo playing the harp? Or a panda playing the piano? Will they form a band and entertain the visitors to the zoo? What kind of music will they play? Blues? Jazz? Or pop? Whatever they play, it’ll be an adventure with the kazoo in hand and a little boy excitedly leading the animals.

Jonathan Marshall’s picture book story, Me and My Kazoo at the Zoo, is a fun story told in lyrical rhyming verse. With simple language for young readers to follow along and beautiful, bold, colorful illustrations, the plot follows one little boy’s imagination as he wonders what will happen if he does take his kazoo to the zoo. The story teaches young readers about the different animals at the zoo as well as some of the different musical instruments the little boy imagines they will play. It also teaches young readers about some of the different styles of music: blues, jazz, pop, for example. And, in case the young reader wants to play the kazoo themselves, the author has provided instructions at the end of the book: “How to play Kazoo in 4 easy steps.” There is fun, adventure, exotic animals, and, most important, music in this charming gem of a book.
