Miming in French by Sheila McGrory-Klyza is the heartwarming story of a friendship that transcends all boundaries of culture, language and religion. Livvie is forced to move to France after the divorce of her parents. Being an American, Livvie does not speak French and she finds it extremely tough to adjust to the new surroundings. She learns to communicate with the help of miming. When she makes friends with Malika, another girl in her class who is a Muslim, they start communicating with each other and form a deep friendship.

The book has many dimensions that make it a compelling story, both light-hearted yet profound. The two girls and their bonding, despite their different religions and cultures, project the story in a novel way. The story is not only about adjusting to a new life, language or culture, but also about acceptance and tolerance of other cultures and religions and how the girls tackle the issues they face, rising above their problems. Apart from introducing readers to French culture, the book also weaves in the emotions of the girls, their loneliness and bonding.

It is a well written book where all the characters complement the story and add charm to its many layers. The plot is informative as well as educational and it emphasizes humanity over culture, religion and language. The author's perspective on the three different cultures - French, American and Muslim -and weaving them together with expertise makes this book a definite winner.
