Misery, You Don't Get My Company by Valerie Silveira asks is happiness really a choice, and how can we navigate through life’s difficulties without succumbing to the beast of negative behaviour? Follow Valerie Silveira's own journey as she copes with the devastating death of her beloved daughter, Jamie. Her daughter had been shot exactly 12 years and 12 days earlier, but this time it had taken her life. Valerie’s life is thrown into turmoil as she faces not only the grieving process, but the realisation that she had been grieving the loss of her daughter for years because of Jamie's drug addiction. Valerie's story is one of self-awareness and courage. She realises that she can either be engulfed in her feelings of guilt, shame and depression (the Beast) or she can fight for her right to happiness and a future. The author shows readers how to understand the grieving process and how to overcome the overwhelming feelings of hopelessness, and to move forward stronger and optimistic about the future. There are practical techniques to follow, including the 9 Actions To Battle Your Beast.

Misery, You Don't Get My Company by Valerie Silveira is an honest and gritty account of grief, loss and all the emotions entangled throughout it. Valerie writes with openness and bravery about her journey from despair to a future of optimism. You will learn about the power of choice between succumbing to your negative emotions, or fighting for happiness. This book was filled with inspiration and many ah-ha moments for me, including, ‘I spent years allowing my happiness to be dependent upon Jamie’s journey,’ as she talks about her daughter's battle with addiction. Also, ‘I didn’t wait for a stop, or for someone to yank me off the ride. I pulled the emergency brake and got off’ is a fantastic analogy to describe the power we all have to choose how long we are a victim, before we decide enough is enough. There are so many pearls of wisdom throughout. I would recommend this book to anyone who is suffering not only loss from death, but even the loss of any relationship.

I have read Misery, You Don’t Get My Company and was deeply touched and encouraged. I have read all of Valerie’s other books as well and find this one to be equally as inspirational and encouraging to the reader. This one has a special way of drawing the reader into the depths of the heart wrenching loss of a child, while still leading us to the heights of hope and healing that are possIble if we choose to allow ourselves to go there. I appreciate Valerie’s authenticity and transparency in her writing. She does not pretend to be someone who has it all together. Instead, she puts it all out there and in doing so, we realize that we also can say to Misery, “you don’t get my company!”

Valerie’s books masterfully awaken the power we have buried beneath the layers.... her 9 actions are life changing! The intention to elevate, awaken and activate the reader to their own path of transformation comes through loud and clear.
