Mykaela has had sorrow and despair for much of her young life; first, as her younger sister fought and defeated cancer and then, when her mother learns she has a rare form of breast cancer, her world begins to crumble. Her friends adore her - in fact, one of them is her on again, off again boyfriend. Distracted and distraught, they just do not seem to have the timing for it to work for them both at the same time.

Four years pass; her mother goes to treatment, goes through remission and back to discovering cancer. It ends in the inevitable which completely tears Mykaela apart.

Thinking that a change of scenery, a fresh start, would help, the 19-year old decides to go to Europe for eight weeks to backpack around and get to know herself after all these years.

A chance meeting brings a friendship that endures her ups and downs; Steve and Austin are her Godsend, taking her with them in their travels to and fro across the continent. Each country offers her insight, hindsight and, in the end, foresight.

Her life is changed forever and those around her shall reap the benefit of her return.

I loved this book. It was difficult in places for me personally to read, not because it was bad; on the contrary, it was incredibly good. It was raw. Having lost my beloved grandfather only a year ago, I found many parallels with the characters and more than once read with tears rolling down my cheeks, the words blurring until I wiped my eyes. Very believable.
