Mr. Smile by Samuel Thompson is a delightful book about two men who had an enduring friendship. The story begins on a rooftop where Craig Greely was about commit suicide by jumping off the roof of his apartment building. As he was about to make the leap, he was halted by Kyle. Unknown to Craig at the time, Kyle’s intentions were the same as Craig’s – to commit suicide. Kyle was able to persuade Craig to go with him to his apartment. The two men were polar opposites. Craig was unemployed, depressed and usually drowned his sorrows by consuming lots of alcohol whereas Kyle was always cheerful and upbeat, focused and enthused about his corporate job. Kyle allowed Craig to stay with him and the two men ended up depending on each other. They forged a strong relationship despite the odds.

Mr. Smile is an interesting book. I love the fact that author Samuel Thompson chose to highlight a fast friendship between two males. Normally friendships between females are written and spoken about at length. This is the first book I have read that has a focus on a male’s BMF (best male friend). I think this is a good thing because many males do not open up emotionally to females and even less to males. The language used is colloquial and easy to understand. The use of irony makes the story very enthralling. This was utilized in respect of the change of fortunes of the two friends. This twist really encouraged me to read further and become more enthralled in the plot. The author did a good job in developing the two main characters of the novel. I was disappointed in the ending of the book; however, it served its purpose in that I was emotionally moved it. I loved the book and I recommend it to all readers.
