Mrinta Quest: A Tale of Zeheryfel is a young adult fantasy novel by A.L. Peevey. The plot centers on a young man by the name of Erki, who initially lives quite a spoiled and selfish existence. When disaster strikes his family and Erki’s brother is struck down by a deadly plague, the young man receives the wake-up call he’s always needed to become a hero and embark on a quest for the cure. Helping him along the way are his Uncle Jaril and the enchanted Khoirey, a long-punished race that seek to do good in the land of Zeheryfel in order to reverse their ancient exile. From here the adventure begins as is filled with new allies, exciting locations, and dangerous magical enemies to overcome.

A.L. Peevey goes to town on world-building to create a unique and immersive fantasy realm that will be pleasing to all fans of the genre. I particularly liked the authenticity of the pronunciation index, which is very helpful in a young adult book in particular. The central characters of Erki (and later Wren) are suitably teenage and single minded at the onset of their quests, but emotional depth does build as the novel progresses. The plot itself will hold few surprises for those familiar with fantasy formulae, but it’s a strong narrative with entertaining description and dialogue that keep you turning the pages. Mrinta Quest: A Tale of Zeheryfel will definitely please its young adult audience, and older fantasy fans will find it an enjoyable light read.
