My Little World by Dawn McLucas and Norma McLucas shares one of the biggest struggles of being young and small. Too many dismiss children as being too small or young to do anything, resulting in dissatisfaction with being young. Too many children and even young teens can’t wait to be older. Since no one can hurry time, children need to learn that even though there are many things they can’t do, there are many other things they can do and enjoy. Summer, Chris, Juan, and Kira are four neighborhood children who share what they can do despite being young and small. This is a story about ability, not disability. Children can do many things, and they may do some things differently than adults. However, we must encourage our children to do what they can, regardless of age or size.

Children need encouragement and understanding. Dawn and Norma McLucas understand this. Their story, My Little World, highlights all the wonderful things children can do. For example, a young child may be unable to cook dinner, but they can set the table. Dawn and Norma emphasize the positive and write in a very uplifting style. As a parent, you can read this book to or with your child and help them learn all the wonderful things they can do at their current age and size. When a child realizes how much they can do now, they are encouraged to look to the future and the greater things they will do then. Discuss with your child how they can help at their age and the variety of things they can do. Children who are encouraged tend not to get into as much trouble and are generally more well-behaved. Spend time teaching your children to enjoy life at every age.
