Nina's Memento Mori by Mathias Freese is a memoir about the author’s wife as he knew her in life. Loving someone in life is beautiful, but loving them in death is very difficult. The author shares the life of his wife and who she was to him. However, he is aware that what is being shared at the moment is very much the perspective of her that he has saved in his memories. Nina was a charming woman who knew what she wanted in life and didn’t let anything stop her from getting it. This was one of the things that Mathias loved about her. This memoir is a little collection of odes to Nina, in which he tries to find his wife for who she really was in essence and how much she meant to him. Along with that, he shares his regrets in life, like not hugging her enough when she was sick or how she was the home that he is going to miss forever.

I loved how Mathias Freese shared details about himself while he offers glimpses of his life with Nina. His safety net isn’t below him, so he has to tread very carefully. But the thing that I loved the most about this book is that Mathias doesn’t mourn Nina’s life in these pages. He asks for forgiveness at times, but he also celebrates her life. His words are tender, they ooze love and adoration. This dedication to his wife is a promise to do better, live better, and find peace in life now that she is gone. You can feel his love for Nina, you will know how much she meant to him and your heart will feel full with it. The existential notes in Nina's Memento Mori open doors for self-reflection, both for the author and readers. This is a beautiful collection of memories that the author has shared with readers, and I thank him for that!
