Not having read Nancy Bush before, I was fascinated by the plot development as well as the plethora of interesting characters. In "Nowhere to Run", the author gives the reader a page-by-page rush so that periodic breathers are required in order to reach the end. There is an obsessed serial killer loose and detective September Rafferty is right in the thick of trying to catch the killer. The only problem is that she is also the prey. Handsome Jake Westerly moves from the dubious role of a suspect to a prominent role in September's heart as the plot unfolds with one turn after another. In order to solve the ongoing crimes against women, the detective must dig deep into her elementary school years and try to come up with someone with a grudge.

The plot moves from a country estate to a vineyard, then to a school, and finally to a former mental institution. In each and every place, there will be clues for the reader-sleuth. Bush develops her characters in such a way that they could be the guy or gal next door and, much to the delight of the reader, she keeps on making those characters vulnerable, mistake-prone and totally human. I really liked the flow of the book. Sometimes you know the ending way too far in advance but this is not the case in "Nowhere to Run". It respects the reader's need to be involved in the resolution of the case while teasing the intellect to try just a bit harder.
