Our Baby Was Born Premature by Paul Alexander is a collection of brief anecdotes from before the baby’s birth until the author’s son was five years old, going on six. Mostly humorous, pithy remarks cover every angle of birth, baby needs, baby habits, and baby food and illness. Most relate to his son Sean’s behavior and the cute, horrifying and dangerous actions he engaged in. Many of the snippets are from his partner Maggie’s point of view. Paul Alexander’s love for his son shines through on every page, and he is very honest about his early failings as a father in that he was not sure what to expect from a newborn infant. Despite being born prematurely, Sean soon develops into a healthy, curious and active toddler. Living in Hollywood is expensive, so their home is not ideal for an adventurous young child, and his parents and the family cat do not have an easy life.

I enjoyed this book; it is an easy read, and with a section for each year of Sean’s life, it is easy to keep track of his development. On occasion, there are aside remarks about baseball, life in Hollywood and other unrelated topics. This book is geared to an American readership and some of the terms might be unfamiliar to readers on the other side of the Atlantic. Despite this, the book is full of laughs and giggles and any parent will take a trip back in time to the horrifying actions of their own children – second-hand chewing gum; food landing on the floor; fights in the play park; attacks on household pets; yes, it all comes back with alarming clarity. A recommended read for all prospective parents – you will be relieved that we all experienced similar episodes and survived to live another day.

I have worked along side Paul for a few years now we originally met through work. he He has a great heart and really knows how to make you laugh if your humor is stronger then a toothpick. I enjoyed the book very much. And who would of thought a guy like me would go from smelling freshly baked bread at 6am to warm baby shit that has blown up all over the blankets and bed
