During the forty-plus years I spent counseling people, one topic I constantly had to teach was the difference between wants and needs. Ben Barrowman teaches this concept to children in Parmesan Pig Saw What Was Needed. In this children’s book, Parmesan Pig learns that often what we think we need is something we only want, instead of need. While we enjoy having our wants met, needs must be met to keep us alive and well. For example, if we do not have food, we can become ill and die. However, having more food than needed to keep us healthy is a want, not a need. We all need someone who believes in us and is our friend. The main needs include food, clothing, and shelter. We should be satisfied when our needs are met and rejoice even more when we receive a want.

Ben Barrowman teaches children the difference between a need and a want in Parmesan Pig Saw What Was Needed. He shows the importance of helping others have their basic needs met. Ben writes in a rhyming manner that is easy to read. Children will delight in the sing-song text and enjoy learning how to help others. This easy-to-read book will help you discuss the distinction between a need and a want with your child. Children will understand that they are blessed if their wants are met. Spend time with your child discussing what they truly need and what they might want. Then, develop projects with your children to help those less fortunate have their needs met.
