Paul, known to many who have read the Bible, may remember him as an unsavory character; this book brings a refreshing new point of view to change that thought process. Through the informative and mood-setting foreword and subsequent chapters, the readers are given scripture and relative perspective that peel off those layers, one at a time. The stance that Paul took on homosexuality, marriage, the role of women and those in authority was not welcomed by those outside of his Christian views which ultimately cut his life on Earth short. In a non-confrontational tone, this book is quite thought provoking; Dr. Sarah Ruden touches heavily on Paul’s controversial views and words, explaining them in modern terms.

I will not pretend to be a scholar nor one who typically cross references and dices scripture. Due to this, I guess that I am one of those who studied the lesson then moved on without contemplation. From the first words of the foreword on, that attitude was put away as the author set the stage, explaining the basic facts of Paul, his life and his beliefs. Once I finished the foreword, I was hooked!
Dr. Ruden’s points throughout the book inspired me to pick up my own Bible and piqued my interest enough to read the referenced passages and decide for myself how I personally feel. I can see now why Paul’s life and the messages that he verbalized so long ago might be considered contentious. Not being one to debate religion, I will keep those opinions to myself but am glad to have had the opportunity to have read this incredible book. The author has done a great job in utilizing her talent and broad knowledge of cultures, history and the Bible’s contents.
