Payback by Jonnie Jacobs is a tale of suspense. Just one second, one decision, can send your life on a different path, a path that takes you out of control. Martha Crawford is away on a business conference. Her birthday, a difficult day, and a single decision. Stopping off at a bar for a drink, Martha meets Todd Wilson, a seemingly charming man. A cocktail too many finds her waking up in his hotel room, in his bed. She tells Todd it can never be; she has a family that she must go home to, but Todd isn’t going to let go that easily. Flowers and phone calls are just the start, and when Todd enters her life by making friends with her husband and her business partner, things start to get out of control. The seduction of her teenage daughter, Jamie, is the last straw. It’s payback time and things are about to get frighteningly real for everyone involved.

The story itself is good although I found it a bit slow for my liking. I like a book that holds me from the first couple of pages. I did persevere and the story picked up and turned out to be quite an enjoyable read. The character development came out through the action, with the main characters slowly coming to life. The plot itself was actually very good. There was quite a bit of suspense and parts of the story that gripped me. The characters were strong and likeable and I found them easy to identify with. A good book for those readers who enjoy long stories and the ending did make up for a lot.
