Author L.C. Barlow nicely wraps up her action-packed dark fantasy/horror Jack Harper Trilogy with Peak. After learning the true nature of her abilities and gaining the power to control the dead, Jack Harper has a new task at hand. She must now defeat the Builder himself. With her friend Lutin captured by the Builder and hostile ferrics opposing her every step of the way, Jack has no choice but to seek help from her old friend Patrick Flannigan. Patrick must help Jack retrieve the elusive godsoul, the ferrics' finite source of infinite power. But events escalate further when Jack's brother Alex returns from the dead and releases something evil into the world. Jack finds herself facing insurmountable odds of eliminating both Alex and the Builder while trying to protect everyone she cares about.

Peak ends the Jack Harper Trilogy with a resounding flourish. L.C. Barlow brings together the plot threads of the previous installments in a seamless fashion, providing satisfying resolutions to each character arc. The plotting feels tighter than ever, and you would be hard-pressed to find a single dull moment in the entire book. Barlow's writing continues to be exemplary, and the pages flew by without a single hitch. There are plenty of horror elements woven into the narrative, which gives the story an added sense of suspense and intrigue. The action sequences are described vividly, and they paint quite a picture in your head. Jack's arc feels well-executed, and her dynamic with Patrick remains as entertaining as ever. I had an absolute blast reading the book and highly recommend it.
