Marilyn B. Wassmann introduces us to her family and has compiled a varied collection of poems written by them. Pen Scratching Poets: A Collection of One Family’s Creative Pursuits comes in two main sections. The first part comprises poems written by her family members. The first is from Grandma Ethel, and her original manuscript was titled Pen Scratches, which was the inspiration for this anthology. Once Marilyn has presented her family, she follows with her own poetry. The book is a collection of thoughts from several generations and shows us how society is changing. The topics range from historical events to the present day but also serve to acquaint us with the family in a highly personal way.

Pen Scratching Poets was written with dedication and effort. I liked the variety of harmonic rhythms, as each of the authors has an individual style. This anthology is perfect for those new to reading poetry because it covers many styles and themes. It is also a recommended read as it reinforces family ties through harmony. Many of the topics are devoted to special moments. Marilyn B. Wassmann shares words of encouragement with images depicting significant people, objects, and places. The pictures range from drawings to photographs, showing us everything that is part of her life. There are more abstract themes, such as happiness and life experience. Marilyn shares personal details such as family customs and traditions on holidays and special occasions. This is a marvelous book as it embodies family togetherness.
